Solo: New Works by Heather Deyling
Curated by Jon Vogt
Reception:  Saturday April 22,  6-8 PM

ATHICA’s Spring 2023 exhibition features the work of Atlanta-based artist Heather Deyling, whose colorful and playful sculptures, wall works, and installations animate the gallery. Her “invented hybrids” live together in a world where plants and animals are undifferentiated and freely swap characteristics. Her use of materials creates a sense of wary approachability, in which these creatures gaze back while inviting the viewer closer. Deyling states that “The ‘Invented Hybrids’ are imagined variations and combinations of flora, fauna and fungi. They represent an alternative future in which species have merged to create new life forms, an adaptation required by the changing conditions of our planet.”

The exhibition is the latest installment of the Solo Duo Trio series, which provides opportunities for individual artists to exhibit their work at ATHICA and its satellite location, ATHICA@Ciné.  Deyling’s work was selected by the ATHICA Exhibitions Committee with additional curation by Exhibition Committee Chair and ATHICA Board President Jon Vogt.

According to exhibition curator Vogt, “We are so pleased to have Deyling’s work in the gallery, following up on other recent exhibitions in which artists are exploring fiber and also environmental change. We were excited to learn that Deyling’s work was just featured in an exhibition ‘Soft Adaptation’ at Gallery 621 in Tallahassee, Florida with Kelly Boehmer, an artist whose work was on view in ATHICA in 2022.”
