THIS LAND – A topical group exhibition that examines immigration in the United States curated by Venezuelan American artist and University of North Georgia art professor Stanley Bermudez. Beyond art on the walls, the exhibit serves as a point of departure for community dialogue and participatory events related to the topic of immigration in America.
Featured artists include Mauricio Saenz, Mahera Khaleque, Valerie Aranda, Deepanjan Mukhopadhyay, and Anthony Baker. In addition, an on-going, participation-based project “Faces of Immigration: Community, Culture, and Conversation about Immigration in America,” will be centrally installed in the gallery. Details follow below. “This Land” is open April 16th-May 28th. Bring your friends and family and share where you come from anytime during gallery hours or come to the opening event on April 16th from 6-8pm. Gallery hours are Thu:1:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Fri – Sun: 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
CALL FOR COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: From April 16-May 28, members of the Athens community and Northeast Georgia region are invited to contribute a story, photograph, or image that deals with the theme of immigration. Submissions may come from personal experience or may be based on that of a family member, friend, or otherwise meaningful relationship and will be part of a collaborative, participation-based installation entitled “Faces of Immigration.” Participants should bring their submissions (2-D, up to 5″ x 7″ ) to ATHICA anytime during gallery hours between now and May 28th. There is no limit on the number of documents submitted. ATHICA is not libel for damage incurred during the course of the exhibition, and original photographs and heirlooms are discouraged.
