smalltownBIGCITY is an exploration of southern vernacular from two very different perspectives. Kelly Porter and Brandon Donahue speak to their individual roots, upbringing, and the cultural heritage that stems from their indelible connection to place. Kelly’s work recalls the visual language of the rural back roads, small towns, and mom and pop culture. Brandon’s work relates to the traditions of folk art, hip hop and graffiti art. This show brings an energy like a visual table tennis match comparing and contrasting different background influences using similar approaches to the process of creation. This collection of artifacts resides in a space between high and low art, transcends medium, and includes found, collected, and created pieces that are sculptural, tactile and defy specific categorization.
