ATHICA@Ciné Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by the Athens-based artist Don Chambers, who works with collage, drawing, and painting techniques, variously incorporating colored pencil, graphite, watercolor, acrylic, and rust. The works on exhibition have emerged from a persistent mark-making practice in which he plays with space, color, and texture, allowing for the random and unexpected to creep in and take over. In the world according to Chambers, the artist is a conduit for what might skitter in over the paper, and perhaps be just on the edge of running away.
These are mostly works on paper I have done over the past four years. Drawing and collage continue to be a part of my practice and often inform the paintings and vice versa. These works maintain a reliance on coincidence and chance that is a struggle to hold on to. I want the marks to hold all the hesitation, trepidation and doubt I feel making them. If this is a magic trick – I want the strings to show.
— Don Chambers
This is Chamber’s first solo exhibition for ATHICA. He was selected by the ATHICA Exhibitions Committee to be featured in the Solo Duo Trio series, which provides opportunities for individual artists to exhibit their work at ATHICA and its partner location, ATHICA@Ciné.
About the Artist
Don Chambers is an artist and musician working in Athens, Georgia since 1988. His mediums include painting, drawing, sculpture and collage. The work can be both abstract and representational. The work often employs rust as a medium. Chance and coincidence play an important part in these explorations of transformation, memory, nostalgia and decay. He earned his MFA in painting and printmaking at the University of Georgia and was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant and Georgia Council for the Arts Artist Grant. He is also a songwriter and has released 10 albums.
