Happening Now ATHICA is delighted to host Claire Molla as our Artist-in-ATHICA during the weeks of December 15, 2019 – January 6, 2020. Molla works with movement and performance and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. She is engaged in a performance practice that is both pedestrian and conceptual. Themes that emerge in her research include the social performance of gender and femininity, cultural standards and measurements of beauty, obscuring what demarcates a performance, obligatory competition, and ritual catharsis. Her work has been presented by the Atlanta Film Society, Dashboard, the Ferst Center for the Arts, the High Museum of Art, The Lucky Penny, Volatile Parts and WonderRoot. She makes work for stage, screen, and the site specific. Her project while in residence at ATHICA is called HYPERTROPHIC. HYPERTROPHICJanuary 4, 2020 6-9pmPerformance and installation run from 6-9. Drop-in anytime.FreeAn acknowledgement of impermanence. A mourning and a celebration. HYPERTROPHIC is a time-based installation and performance bringing the internal to the surface. Utilizing kinetic sculpture and live sound, this three-hour performance responds to the artist’s heart disease diagnosis, attempting a ritual for healing. Reliance on intuition and endurance become evident when coping with the duality of gratitude and dread. HYPERTROPHIC is interested in the subtleties of pain, repetition, catharsis, and change. This project confronts histories of self-delusion as self-preservation and wonders what role anticipatory grieving has in fear and fulfillment. Artist TalkJanuary 5, 2020, 2:00 pmMolla will share images of her work and discuss her practice. Light refreshments will be served. More about the Artistwww.clairemolla.com
