An acknowledgement of impermanence. A mourning and a celebration. HYPERTROPHIC is a time-based installation and performance bringing the internal to the surface. Utilizing kinetic sculpture and live sound, this three-hour performance responds to the artist’s heart disease diagnosis, attempting a ritual for healing. Reliance on intuition and endurance become evident when coping with the duality of gratitude and dread. HYPERTROPHIC is interested in the subtleties of pain, repetition, catharsis, and change. This project confronts histories of self-delusion as self-preservation and wonders what role anticipatory grieving has in fear and fulfillment.
