Hindsight 20/20: A Community Catharsis

CALL FOR ENTRIES: ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art announces a community farewell to 2020, in which members of the Athens community are invited to share artifacts, meditations, artwork, and other personal expressions in a group pop-up exhibition. Sign-up to pin-up.

Exhibition and Events at ATHICA, Free and Open to All 
COVID precautions: Attendance limited to 10 persons in the gallery at a time including staff.  Hand sanitizing and masks required for entry. Pin-up events require advance timed entry tickets.

Can you believe that 2020 is almost over?

The ATHICA board asks you to join us in a community reflection on the unprecedented events of 2020, through which we have all struggled as individuals and as a community. The Hindsight 20/20 community pop-up exhibition and event series is for anyone who has something to share—no experience necessary. ATHICA will provide a safe space to process, reflect, meditate, and prepare to move forward.  Let’s build our resilience by sharing and saying goodbye to the experiences that have shaped 2020.

Do you have a poster or sign you made to carry in a protest or put in your front yard? A poem or a prayer? A tee shirt, a bumper sticker, banner, or button? Did you take up knitting, crossword puzzles, or origami? When you think back over 2020, what exemplifies the year for you? A picture from a magazine can tell  your story—consider adding your own thoughts or words on top. How can your personal symbolism and experience be expressed in everyday materials?

All are invited to lend artifacts, meditations, posters, signs, artwork, and personal expressions to an ongoing drop-in pin-up exhibition and community farewell to 2020.  A community message wall will provide opportunities for on-site creation and reflection.  Everyone in the community is welcome to drop into the gallery during gallery hours on Saturdays and Sundays and sign-up to bring your items for pin-up during timed, limited access pin-up events on December 10 and 17. Take part by bringing in contributions for placement in the gallery or contribute to the community message wall while you’re there.

Board member and Hindsight 20|20 coordinator Paula Runyon states: Hindsight 20/20 is an opportunity for community reflection and storytelling. After experiencing the events of this past year, we want to hear what you have to say. What did you learn, feel, do or see? Our hope is for a collective participation in this exhibition which provides an opportunity for (safe) togetherness. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate. 

Streaming events during the first week of January will highlight additional literary and musical expressions.  A final goodbye to 2020 will take place on January 9, 2021 at the end of which all materials will be taken down and returned to their owners.
