The Third Act, an exhibition curated by ATHICA Director Emeritus Lizzie Zucker Saltz, contemplates aspects of contemporary aging, an increasingly central issue as the additional thirty years that have been added to human life expectancy over the last century create changes of many kinds. The exhibit features thought provoking artworks by nine artists who address these issues with sensitivity in a wide variety of media; as well as an educational area developed by students from UGA’s Institute of Gerontology, led by Dr. Anne P. Glass. From a 14′ long kinetic sculpture centered on an EKG strip of the last hour of a woman’s life to photographs of local seniors at events such as Rabbit Box and Word of Mouth, The Third Act: Contemplating Aging flips the stereotypical media focus on youth on its head. Held at ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art it runs from January 18th to March 2, 2014.
