This month’s edition of Sonic Space features four ensembles presenting an evening of adventurous and uncategorizable sounds.
Sun Gong
Sun Gong (Americus, GA) makes meditative drones and ambient compositions inspired by the mystical and the mundane. Drawing on the classic new age and minimalist compositional idioms of the 1970s but strongly rooted in DIY practice and mentality. Sun Gong transmutes inner and outer topographies into spacious soundscapes.
Free Rain
Free Rain is an Athens, GA improvisational collective focused on prepared instrumentation, ethereal atmospherics, pseudo-gamelan funk, intuitive pattern generation, polyrhythmic excursions, and spiritual punk jazz. Featuring local legend George Davidson on tenor saxophone, Michael Pierce (sweetearthflying) on guitar, Shannon Perry (Wet Garden) on bass, and James Owen (doom ribbons) on drums.
Oceanic Sound Research
Oceanic Sound Research is an ambient electronic trio from Athens, Georgia featuring Elephant 6 pioneer John Kiran Fernandes (Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System), Oliver Domingo (Organically Programmed) and Kyle MacKinnel (Casual Ether) perpetually scanning the depths.
frog like leaf
Jon Vogt (frog like leaf) is ATHICA’s current Board President and Chair of Exhibitions. He is a multi-instrumentalist and artist who teaches at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. His sound and art interests revolve around pattern, noise, collaboration, iteration, and intuition.
