Monster Drawing Rally Invitation to Artists

Saturday, November 2, 2019, 10am-3:00pm

Location: Ciné, 234 W Hancock Ave., Athens, GA 30601

Artist Registration Deadline:

October 15, 2019

As Athens’ leading independent, non-profit,  cultural venues, Ciné and ATHICA provide homes for the creative culture that our area artists, musicians, filmmakers, performers, and writers produce. In recognition of this shared mission, Ciné and ATHICA are joining forces to host a Monster Drawing Rally as a collaborative fundraising event.  Monster (as in “REALLY BIG event”, not as in drawings of monsters although that’s OK too) Drawing Rallies originated several years ago at Southern Exposure, an arts-centered non-profit in San Francisco. Since then, this highly successful fundraiser has been replicated by arts organizations in cities throughout the U.S.

As a member of the creative  community which we serve, we invite you to participate in this important fundraising event in which artists produce works in front of a live audience, which are then made available for sale to the attendees. A unique mix of live performance, art-sale, and fun party, the Monster Drawing Rally gives all involved the chance to see art-making in action; connect with local artists; mingle with friends; and buy the finished works as they are created and posted on the buy wall.

Here’s how the rally works:  There will be three 1-hour art-making rounds.  During each round, one-third of the 60 or more artists we seek to recruit will  create one or more artworks. Artists may work in any medium and subject as long as the finished work is 20” X 24” or less and light enough to be taped to the wall. Artworks may be started off-site prior to the event but must be finished during the scheduled time. Artists may produce as many works as they would like during the period. Artists are provided a flat workstation and chair but should bring their preferred supplies.

Once an artist completes an artwork, it will be hung on the buy wall for viewing and immediate sale. Visitors may purchase completed works of art for $60 each. Multiple buyers interested in the same artwork will play rock-paper-scissors or draw the highest playing card from the deck to “win” the right to purchase. The event will wrap up with a half-price sale of any remaining artwork. All work created is donated to Ciné and ATHICA. Proceeds from the event provide direct support for both Ciné and ATHICA programs.

Participating registered artists receive free entry for themselves to the event and are encouraged to enjoy the festivities before and after their scheduled time. In addition, participating artists may choose any two of the following thank you gifts for the donation of their valuable time and talent: two guest tickets to the Monster Draw Rally ($20 value), an annual Ciné membership ($25 value), a 2020 annual ATHICA membership ($25 value), an ATHICA entry fee waiver for a future exhibition ($25 value), a pair of Ciné movie tickets ($20 value), or a coupon towards a Monster Rally art purchase ($20 value).

Confirmed participating artists include Art Rosenbaum, Lou Kregel, Amanda Burk, Jim Barsness, Camille Hayes, Will Eskridge, John Cleaveland, Susan Hable, Stan Mullins, Ray Lee, and Michael Lachowski. More artists are signing up every day; a complete list appears below.

The event will feature MC Didi Dunphy of the Lyndon House Arts Center and local favorite DJ Mahogany to provide musical inspiration. Bloody Marys and snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event for $10.00; kids get in free. Vintage cartoons will play in one of the Ciné theatres throughout the event as alternative fun for kids.

Please confirm your participation through this link. After the artist list is at capacity, you will be added to the waiting list. We will follow up with more details about the schedule and logistics for the event in mid-October.
