In collaboration with Citizen Advocacy Athens-Clarke (CAAC), ATHICA’s newest exhibition, Center, explores current ideas of community and place that are ever-present in contemporary art today. Each artist in the exhibition investigates different aspects of this focus from immigration, sovereignty, documentary, and festivity to utopian notions of togetherness.
Curated by ATHICA’s Board of Directors, Center is the first exhibition following the departure of founding Director Lizzie Zucker Saltz after ten years of supporting, inspiring, and challenging our community. When approached by CAAC to collaborate on an exhibition focusing on the topic of community, ATHICA’s board felt this would be the perfect partnership to share ATHICA’s story, its commitment to Athens, its people and environs, and the notion of bringing artists from all over the world to enrich our very own. The collaboration between ATHICA and CAAC came about, in part, to help CAAC get their mission out to a wider audience. Established in 1995, Citizen Advocacy Athens-Clarke is a local, private non-profit that is devoted to strengthening Athens-Clarke County through the inclusion and empowerment of local people who live with disabilities. The mission of CAAC is to foster relationships that offer protection and advocacy for people with disabilities who are at risk of neglect or abuse or are socially isolated from the community.
