Composer and marimba virtuoso Nathaniel Bartlett brings his five-octave acoustic marimba, electronics, a powerful custom computer named Atlas, and an eight-channel array of loudspeakers to the gallery, creating a three-dimensional field of sound encompassing the audience.
Participating Artists
Born in 1978 in Madison, Wisconsin, Bartlett holds degrees from the
Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY), the Royal Academy of Music
(London), and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and studied privately
with marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens. In 2006, his debut solo album,
Precipice, was released on Albany Records, including pieces by Philip
Glass, Steve Reich, and commissioned works by contemporary composers.
In Bartlett's unique touring rig, the positioning and movement of sounds
in physical space, resulting in kinetic audio sculptures, is a central
musical parameter. The three-dimensional soundfield is enriched by the use
of high-definition audio (superior to CD-quality audio), which allows for
a significant increase in sonic nuances. A dual-display computer monitor
has replaced the music stand and notation is integrated in real time with
the audio parameters of the music.
In addition to his marimba-plus-electronics activities, Bartlett also
composes music for acoustic instruments, two recent compositions being a
solo percussion work entitled star_birth and a solo flute work entitled
networks.
