The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said emissions of greenhouse gases--released when fossil fuels are burned--must peak and begin to decline within ten years if the planet is to avoid the worst effects of global climate change. The American public finally seems to be waking up to this global threat, as evidenced by the popularity of recent films such as An Inconvenient Truth and Wall-E.
This exhibit--our 30th--is designed to to raise awareness of this critical issue. From apocalyptic images of a drowned planet to the promise of future energy sources, these 17 artists address this pressing issue with passion, humor and urgency. Four manufacturers product loans offer hope.
The aerial photography of featured artist Christoph Gielen reveals hidden geometries in the sprawling subdivisions and spaghetti junctions that are partly responsible for the steep increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the last half-century. Their stunning compositions and intense details bring a concrete reality to the concepts of energy production and consumption.
A special donation from the Athens-based band REM and underwriting by Farm Electric will allow us to replace our current track-lighting bulbs with SATCO efficient compact-florescent track-lighting bulbs, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the gallery. Loans of the folliwng commercially available products enhance the exhibit:
1- An Air Breeze wind turbine, courtesy of Marietta, GA-based renewable energy installers Soenso Energy.
2- A SunPower Solar Panel courtesy of local green tech corporation, One World Sustainable.
3- A Vectrix VX-1 a 100% electric motor bike.
