Employing an amusingly self-conscious self-promotional technique, Self Made--a group of three contemporary visual artists from San Francisco--are touring the U.S. 'rock-band' style this summer. (Athens is one stop on a twenty-nine city, one month long tour). Their approach challenges traditional practices, blurring the line between the event of the art opening and time-based performance arts.
Self Made will hit Athens in the morning and in one day only the three artists—Brice Bischoff, Kevin Parks Hauser and Jamie Spinello—will install their installation, photography and wall-based constrictions in time for a summer solstice reception. In both their art and personalities the three artists of Self Made represent the different roles band members often embody: the rock star lead singer, the composed songwriter, and the structural percussionist. The visual art ranges from large-scale photographic abstractions to intimate cutouts from plastic, mylar, and paper.
Self-Made even offers a CD catalogue of the exhibit for sale, a la typical band protocol. More images, polemic, tour blog and a complete tour schedule can be found on their site.
This is an official Athfest event, designed by ATHICA as entertainment for
the Athens' masses before the renowned Annual Flagpole Magazine Music
Awards.
